HowStuffWorks

Checking Tire Pressure:
  • Check sticker on inside of the driver's side door for the proper tire pressure.
  • A tire gauge is necessary to ensure that pressure is correct.
  • Remove caps on valves and attach tire gauge until the pressure can be read.
  • Replace caps to prevent debris from disturbing the valve.

Checking for Wear:
  • A simple penny can be used to test for excessive wear on your tread.
  • Place the penny with Lincoln's head down in-between the tread, if the top of his head is visible the tread is worn, if his head is covered by the tread surface, you're OK.
  • To measure with a ruler the tread depth should be at least 3/32 of an inch.
  • Visually inspect for cuts or scrapes on the sides of the tire which can be very dangerous.
  • Under-inflated or over-inflated tires will cause uneven wear on your tires.
